Summary

[edit]
Description
English: L’Ange des Splendeurs (1894) ("The Angel of Splendour"), oil on canvas, 127 x 146 cm. One of the earliest visionary paintings of Delville, from the 1890s. According to Brendan Cole, it depicts two androgynous figures: a more feminine angel with a radiant halo, and a human rising from the natural world. Here are found opposites that are recurrent in Delville's works: light and dark, spirit and matter, ideal and natural etc. Delville adopted an original Symbolist style which he called "Idealist art", and he was influenced by Esoteric spirituality (such as the concept of human spiritual evolution).
