In 1996, Postverk Føroya, the postal administration of the Faroe Islands, issued 19 stamps, including a miniature sheet of 3 stamps.

Date of issue: 2 January, Photographer: Palle Hatting. This stamp was voted the most beautiful Faroese stamp of 1996 in a poll of Faroe Islands collectors.

Europe CEPT: Famous women

Date of issue: 15 April. Paintings by Sámal Joensen-Mikines of nameless women. Postverk Føroya decided to present the nameless seamen's wifes as the famous women to honour. FR 288 was voted the second most beautiful stamp of 1996.
