Language versions

[edit]

Hi (username redacted)! About this image:

Would you be interested in having French and/or Bambara (vernacular of Mali) versions of this image made? WhisperToMe (talk) 21:45, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WhisperToMe! I definitely like the idea of having the map available in other languages (how about Tuareg too?). I'm not sure I'm qualified to do the translation myself though...what exactly are you asking for? (username redacted) 18:21, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, there would be a version of File:Azawad Tuareg rebellion 2012.svg where the names, etc. are in French instead of English -e.g. " Algérie" instead of "Algeria" - If you want I can compile a list of French terms for a French version - Tuareg would be nice too, since the rebellion involves them. I'll have to see if Bambara and Tuareg speakers are interested in making these versions WhisperToMe (talk) 20:50, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, that would be wonderful. If you can compile lists of the corresponding terms in each language, I'd be happy to place them in the map. Remember that I'll need translations of the legend and a title as well as place names. (username redacted) 17:25, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

I started it, but I don't have everything yet:

French:

  • MNLA rebels -> Rebelles du MNLA
  • As of Mar. 15, 2012 -> Au 15 mars 2012
  • Area claimed -> Zone revendiquée
  • Current control -> contrôle actuel
  • Former control -> ancien contrôle
  • Algeria -> Algérie
  • Mauritania -> Mauritanie
  • Senegal -> Sénégal
  • Guinea -> Guinée
  • Benin -> Bénin

For the two with question marks, I started en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Language#French_help:_Control_by_rebel_movements WhisperToMe (talk) 17:15, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! It might have to wait a few days, but I will get this done. Any suggestions for a file name? It doesn't necessarily have to be a direct translation if you can think of something better (maybe something with "Mali" in it...). Also, in the latest update to the map, I'm changing "former control" to "past control" to include a couple of towns which it's unclear if the MNLA held onto or not. (username redacted) 13:28, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Right. But there will be a separate file for each language, right? I just figured it would be most useful to name each one in the corresponding language. (username redacted) 13:16, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, each language version gets its own file. One thing I do is use XXXX_Spanish.png, etc. or XXXX_ES.png - You can name each one in its own language if you want, but personally I think it's not essential to do so. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:52, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the updated French map, the date would be "1 avril 2012" WhisperToMe (talk) 05:04, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have to see if I can find a translation for "Overrun, unknown if still held" WhisperToMe (talk) 05:01, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it could be changing soon anyway - see the newest section on my talk page....though I am planning on trying to put the French map together tonight. (username redacted) 13:32, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
I finally posted it to Commons: File:Mali Azawad rebellion fr.svg. Sorry it took me so long - it actually didn't take to much time once I got around to it. I modified the title in the legend - I think the French should be okay. But I guess we probably should replace "former control" at least with something like "unknown control".... (username redacted) 16:50, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm running "unknown control" by the EN language help desk at en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Language#French_help:_.22Unknown_control.22 WhisperToMe (talk) 21:40, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks! (username redacted) 11:40, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
You are welcome! Someone just posted a response with the answers. Please take a look at the page WhisperToMe (talk) 12:50, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Changes have been made. Still struggling with the right label for the orange towns (on the English version too), but I think the current is a lot better than before. (username redacted) 12:29, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, (username redacted)! WhisperToMe (talk) 01:54, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Great blog!

[edit]

I really like your blog (although I am unsure how to subscribe...). Just a quick note: the map you are using as background is outdated: it does not show South Sudan. Not trying to be critical, just wanted to point it out since you seem like one of the only people other than me who'd care. Thanks for all your work on your blog as well as Commons! Metaknowledge (talk) 06:23, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Metaknowledge! Glad to hear you like the blog! You can either keep checking back on the website for new posts, or subscribe to the blog feed (you'll need to use a feed reader program or website). (username redacted) 08:25, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and thanks for pointing out the issue with the background map - I'd actually noticed too that it doesn't have South Sudan. I'll get around to fixing it, but it just hasn't been a priority lately with all this other stuff happening. Good eyes! (username redacted) 13:27, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Azawad clarification

[edit]

In regards to File:Azawad Tuareg rebellion 2012.svg, I find the legend confusing. It heads "Tuarag Rebels in Mali", and follows with "Area claimed" and "Currently held". These seem to be from the viewpoint of the rebels. The next one, "Overrun, unknown if still held", seems from that sense to indicate that it is unknown if the rebels still hold the city. I suspect though that it is the rebels who are overrunning the town (being on the offensive). If I'm right and it's the rebels attacking, then perhaps the label can change to "Currently in conflict" or something similar. Cheers, Chipmunkdavis (talk) 12:09, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. I'm not completely clear on what the confusion is though. It's supposed to mean "Overrun by the rebels, but unknown by us whether the rebels still hold it". It does not necessarily indicate that it is currently in conflict - only that the rebels took it over at one point but that we have reason to wonder whether they're still there. Is that not what it sounds like to you? I want to get to the bottom of this, because it's important for the legend to be clear to the readers. (username redacted) 13:36, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
It makes sense now that you've explained it, but before I wasn't exactly sure as to which viewpoint the descriptions were from. In my experience, "overrun" is usually used to describe the viewpoint of those being, well, overrun, which would be Mali, thus putting "held" from the Malian viewpoint.
Oh, I think I understand now. Do you have any ideas of how to better phrase it? I've been having a heck of a time trying to figure out the wording for that one. (username redacted) 14:45, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Simply changing "overrun" to an attacking word like "Conquered" would help, although it does sound very un-politically correct. Hard to find anything concise. "No Malian military presence"? (by the way, what happened to Taoudenni?) Chipmunkdavis (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I used "overrun" to avoid the connotation that they had made a point of consolidating control of the town (the source on Dire and Goundam makes it sound like they might have just ransacked the whole place and then left) - otherwise we could just use "taken" or "captured". Not sure what to do at this point. Maybe it will become irrelevant soon, if there are some boundaries for Azawad negotiated. No news from Taoudenni, as far as I can tell. By best guess is that neither side bothered to send their armies that far out of the way when the big three cities were the main prizes. MNLA probably controls the routes to the town now, even if they don't occupy it physically. No source on that though, just speculation. (username redacted) 08:33, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
On a sidenote, I've created File:Azawad (orthographic projection).svg, but as you're more knowledgeable about where exactly the border lies, then if you wish to fiddle, that'd be good. It's hard to get exact borders at the refinements of those maps anyway, at least for me! Chipmunkdavis (talk) 11:33, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I'll take a look. Maybe we should adjust the colors too - the dark gray and dark green are barely distinguishable on my monitor. (username redacted) 14:45, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Made some small adjustments to the border. Also changed the color for the rest of Mali, but I don't know if there's an established convention for these maps, so definitely feel free to change it again if I did something wrong. (username redacted) 15:01, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
There isn't an established convention for the colour of claimants on breakaway states (note I didn't create these conventions, but have done a bit to follow it), but it definitely shouldn't be light green, as that's the colour we currently give breakaway states on the maps of recognised states. I took grey from File:Location Kosovo Europe.png, where it seems to work better. I'm having trouble getting a distinct yet non-confrontational colour. Feel free to make the decision for another colour before I do. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. I'm not sure what to do either...anything besides shades of gray or green seems like it would contrast in a way that would be counter-intuitive. (username redacted) 08:33, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
I've used a slightly lighter shade of grey, but one which I believe is still visible against the background. I've also added a border around Azawad, to separate the two. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 09:36, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great! Good job. For the yellow/orange on the Azawad rebel control map, what do you think of "Unknown if occupied (previously taken)"? (username redacted) 12:33, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Much clearer! Covers all the bases as far as I can tell. You're going to face a whole new set of problems if there's an ECOWAS counter-attack, but I suppose than can wait. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 17:11, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great - I'll change it now then. And yeah, I'll deal with other developments as they come along.... :-) (username redacted) 17:27, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Maritime Claims of Peru and Ecuador

[edit]

Hello GeoEvan !!!

I don't know if you could update the map File:Maritime Claims of Peru and Ecuador.svg, because there is no longer a disputed area between Peru and Chile after the judgment of the CIJ of 2014 (File:Maritime Claims of Peru.svg) and Ecuador changed its maritime claims (File:Maritime Claims of Ecuador.svg). Maybe I could update it for you, but I don't know if you want to keep it as a historical map. Thanks.--Shadowxfox (talk) 20:46, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Since this one is being used to illustrate the former dispute at en:Chilean–Peruvian_maritime_dispute, I think it would be better to keep it as a historical map and upload the updated version separately. I'm a little busy right now, but I encourage you to upload an updated version if you'd like! GeoEvan (talk) 04:05, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded an updated map based in your file. I consider to avoid confusion, the old file should be renamed to something like "Maritime Claims of Peru and Ecuador (until 2014).svg". Do you think the same? --Shadowxfox (talk) 12:24, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it seems like that would be appropriate. I'm not familiar with the file renaming process - will the links to it on other wikis be automatically updated, or does someone need to do that manually? GeoEvan (talk) 10:03, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
