Moving categories

[edit]

Hi, I saw you used HotCat for each single file. This is extremely tedious (at least I think so).

 1. If you want to move the files of one category to another one yourself, you can use Cat-a-lot.
 2. If you want a bot doing this task for you, you can request it by placing Move (read the documentation for the template) on the Category-description page of the category that should be moved.

More information is on Commons:Rename a category. Regards -- RE rillke questions? 23:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

your new Railway walk category

[edit]

Would the images in Category:Railway walk be appropriate to also appear in Category:Rail trails in the United Kingdom, and if so is there a need for the new category to exist? Pedro Xing (talk) 02:59, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably right. I kinda burned out on it - its so complicated and from some of the pictures its hard to tell if vehicles use it or what. Some are just "disused" which does have it's own category. It's ok with me if you put them in the category you suggested. Thanks! MathewTownsend (talk) 14:11, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the three images from the previous category to Category:Rail trails in the United Kingdom. I was puzzled by the appearance of your new category within Category:Rail transport as well as by the name of it, since categories typically have a title with pluralized generic nouns. However, I see now that perhaps you wanted to group them together as part of the same trail, in which case a category with Walk capitalized to indicate its use as a proper noun might be a better name. Perhaps Category:South Staffordshire Railway Walk might be a better named category to contain those three and any future images added. At this time I think it appropriate to put the original Category:Railway walk up for discussion for deletion as it is now empty. Pedro Xing (talk) 17:50, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Sorry for any trouble I have caused you. Putting categories up for deletion is kind of hard. The templates aren't clear to me. I'll get some practice putting Category:Railway walk up for discussion for deletion. How do I put it up for discussion? (Maybe I can figure it out!) MathewTownsend (talk) 17:56, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
At this time it looks like the Railway walk category has been deleted, hence no further action will be needed for that task. If you would prefer to create another category (such as the one I suggested) you can go ahead and create it. For that particular suggestion it would perhaps be better to place the new category within the existing hierarchy, such as within Category:Rail transport in Staffordshire and Category:Rail trails in the United Kingdom. Pedro Xing (talk) 00:29, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I can't quite get a handle on this category stuff. In some ways I can't figure it out. I've been roaming around, looking how other things are done here. As far as the Railway walk category, I'm certianly willing to just drop it. Thanks so much for your help and input. MathewTownsend (talk) 00:57, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Menai Suspension Bridge

[edit]

Please stop adding unnecessary categories to File:Menai Suspension Bridge Dec 09.JPG. It's in Category:Menai Suspension Bridge, which is enough, since that's a subcategory of Category:Suspension bridges in Wales, which is in Category:Suspension bridges in the United Kingdom and so on up the category tree. There is no need to put individual files in parent categories when they are in an appropriate sub-category. Regards, Bencherlite (talk) 23:10, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ok, sorry. The bridge categories are hard to navigate. i get marooned in a category that doesn't go anywhere, search doesn't work very well, and its only luck if I can find my way out. Very hard to understand. i've started bookmarking categories so I can get back to the categories I want. Once I'm out on a limb, I'm stuck. MathewTownsend (talk) 23:15, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Which bot are you using

[edit]

Which bot are you using to transfer your images from English Wikipedia? Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:29, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I use the first one that's offered. Not sure what the name is. I'll pay attention the next time I come across a page that needs transferring. MathewTownsend (talk) 22:45, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The first one that's offered on which screen? Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:13, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When I'm on wikipedia and click on an image that says something like "this image has been tagged by a bot for upload to the commons" and it offers two ways to upload it. I always choose the first one and have never tried the other. MathewTownsend (talk) 23:18, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It says:
"This is a candidate to be copied to Wikimedia Commons. Freely licensed or public domain media are more accessible to other Wikimedia projects if placed on Commons. Any user may perform this move—please see Moving images to the Commons for more information.
Please thoroughly review the copyright status of this file and ensure that it is actually eligible for transfer to Commons. If you are concerned that this file could have problems with its attribution information and/or copyright status, then remove this notice and DO NOT transfer it to Commons. By transferring this file to Commons, you acknowledge you have read this message and are willing to accept all and any consequences for inappropriate transfers. Repeat violators will be blocked from editing.
If this image has been copied to Commons replace this tag with or if a different filename is used on Commons.Copy to Commons: via CommonsHelper · via wmfLabs CommonsHelper". MathewTownsend (talk) 23:31, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So you use CommonsHelper? Link: [1]. Because I use CommonsHelper, but I never have the problem that you seem to be getting a lot, which is that, at the very bottom of the text of the image you're uploading, it gives an extra incorrect license (!). Here is one of many examples: [2]. I seriously doubt it's because you've done anything wrong; in fact, it's probably something in the code's fault. But I want to see how to reproduce it. So can you do me an enormous favor? When you're moving images from another project, can you check at the bottom of the text to make sure it doesn't add an extra license header and license? If it does add the license, could you do me an even bigger favor and: 1) Hit the back button on your browser, 2) Copy the URL, 3) Open up a new window to message me and 4) Paste the URL, 5) Tell me which browser and version you're using, and which operating system, and 6) tell me which boxes you checked and which fields you filled in if any were different. I know that's a lot to do, but it's easier than it sounds. If you do this, it would be an enormous help to the project, because that bot is and has been transferring images with the wrong license for months now, which creates all sorts of legal and ethical headaches. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:59, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be happy to do this the next time I upload. MathewTownsend (talk) 12:16, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just uploaded another image. File:AlapahaRiver2002.jpg. Is it ok? MathewTownsend (talk) 20:55, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No; it has the double license on the bottom. Unfortunately the toolserver replag is quite high right now so the bots are down, so I can't check on why it might have happened. Can you please tell me your browser and operating system? Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:00, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Firefox 12, Windows 7. I'm not clear what is going wrong. MathewTownsend (talk) 22:03, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Look: there are two licensing sections (actually three; ignore the one inside the information template): Special:PermanentLink/71355267. I'll highlight them in red in wikitext:

{{Information
|Description={{en|Surface water-Groundwater (SW-GW) interaction , August 2002. Entire flow of ...

PD-USGov-USGS

<!-- Templates "Template:Copy to Wikimedia Commons", "Template:File other", "Template:Main other" were used in the original description page as well , but do not appear to exist on commons. -->

Original upload log
PD-USGov

Now again, it's not occurring when I do it, ever. So if you could click on this link: w:Special:PermanentLink/468500127 and go through all the steps you normally go through until you save it, and explain to me exactly what you see, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:31, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There, it did it again: File:Ybor Immigrant statue.jpg. Can you not tell me what you see every step of the way as youŕe clicking the buttons? Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:23, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what you say I am doing. I follow the directions on the pages: I download the image, click on upload to commons, select the image from the desktop, select a license, add categories and upload. Should I not select a license? Is that the problem? MathewTownsend (talk) 23:31, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. I see how it happens now. The answer is, no, you should not choose a license, but I will try to talk to someone to see if we can get that option removed when CommonsHelper is involve, because you're far from the only person to make that assumption incorrectly (it's not your fault). Thanks~. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:04, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it says in big warning letters to be sure to choose a license or it won't upload. And I've had that experience, though probably it wasn't transferring from the commons. Glad we figured it out! MathewTownsend (talk) 00:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
File:Ybor Immigrant statue.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi, please use useful categories and don't over-categorize your images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Food and drink +
Category:Malaysia +
Category:Malaysian cuisine +
Category:Indian cuisine by country +
Category:Breads +
Category:Chapati

You'll help to save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Category:Chapati

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category) etc., or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies). Do not add - in addition - the categories of the "parent category", among them cities, states and countries etc.

For further information on categories please read Commons:Categories referring to an accurate categorisation, simplifying your further uploads and categorisation in general. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the commons:help desk.

Thank you for your assistance, Roland 19:58, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

ok, I'll stop adding categories. Sorry! MathewTownsend (talk) 20:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, no, please, not adding, please as mentioned reduce the categories of those WP-transfers !!!!! thx, Roland 20:19, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi, so I should check "Remove categories"? As I don't add most of them, they are transferred by the bot. So I should just make sure the bot doesn't transfer any categories? MathewTownsend (talk) 20:24, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as pointed before, please use useful categories and don't over-categorize your images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Kedareshvara Temple, Balligavi + (you moved that category)
Category:Balligavi +

Category:Kedareshvara Temple, Balligavi (and for example Category:Reliefs in Karnataka)

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category) etc., or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies). Do not add - in addition - the categories of the "parent category", among them cities, states and countries etc.

PS: Please avoid such changes (ok, you did revert) of imho 'well-established' categories.

 • whoever you are, since you didn't bother to sign, I think I did the right thing by figuring out and creating Category:Kedareshvara Temple, Balligavi since those were all uncategorized images. The categorizing "help" pages are not helpful at all. They assume you already know everything. I still don't know how to find categories that already exist beside "search". The "cat" helper is inscrutable, and the "quick cat" or "hot cat" or whatever it is - it's more misleading than otherwise. MathewTownsend (talk) 01:22, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your color adjustment because the photographer specifically commented on the green color, so a shift to yellow seems counterproductive. I will hold off uploading your modification as a separate file, since you may want it to appear in your photostream. Dankarl (talk) 18:41, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[3] Per your comments before. I was the pioneer in looking for copyright problems, and I actually got her to stop infringing for a while. Category discussion warning

School lunch rooms has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
