  •  Support Daniel Case (talk) 00:42, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Neutral It is tilted: the water falls not vertically (per Colin) and also should flow upwards to reach the right side of the rock. I think, the surface of the rock is in fact horizontal. Then the water can reach the right side and falls vertical. --Llez (talk) 06:12, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Neutral I'm sure Podzemnik is capable of keeping his camera level. If there is sufficient pressure behind a stream, water has no problem flowing upwards for a short bit, and the dribble have enough kinetic energy to arch a bit. I had the same skeptic (and groundless) comments on one of my first FPCs. There is water to the right of Colin's note that is almost vertical so I take it the water is fanning out from the rock. Looking at the background with vines hanging down and plants growing up, the photo is dead straight. Take a look at what a "tilt adjustment" would do to them. I also firmly believe that pure white sometimes is just pure white in photos. However, I'm not wowed enough by the scene to support this. --Cart (talk) 13:06, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  I withdraw my nomination Thanks everyone so much for their votes and comments. I'm honestly unsure if it's straight or not but even if it is, it seems like lack of wow will prevent the photo from succeding anyway. Thanks Colin for the note, I'll check it out later. --Podzemnik (talk) 04:46, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Charlesjsharp is a very experienced animal photographer, and his opinion must be heard. At first, I was sure it was the same pair of animals. Charles' question is correct, and I sent it to the photographer. The author (Nadezhda Khaustova) does not have full confidence that in the second picture the same small marmot as in the first. Therefore, it will be correct to withdraw the nomination. However, the pictures are wonderful both and I intend to put one of them up for nomination at FP. Motorboat Ryds 435DL and cloud reflections in Sämstad harbor, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.
  • Wow, thanks! Me, I like the almost-illusion of the boat being suspended in the air among the clouds by the ropes (they are all ropes, no wires). But I agree with Frank, without the ropes, the shot would be banal and I wouldn't have nominated it here. --Cart (talk) 15:36, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We all have different ways of relating to things. I grew up on boats, and I love trying to depict even simple ones in an good way. It isn't hard to make a nice photo of an extraordinary boat, the real art is to make an interesting photo of a common one. --Cart (talk) 14:34, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was a bit quick. I know the conditions are not the easiest and that it's not easy to pick a "best" setup for the scene. Probably I'd have been more "forgiving" with a better composition and more side view. - Benh (talk) 18:34, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Guys, I don't know what you mean with better composition, the background here is not loaded/cluttered, so composition here is not a minus, which to me is a plus. If you expect crispy sharpness with a nice background of colorful anemones (Nemo style) of species of which we have so far poor quality, then I ask for somebody to do the job. Benh: please, show me the texture and sharpness you ask for here on Commons, I've shot already 5000+ pictures underwater and I can tell you that this one is sharp. Regarding the "side view" that would rather result in DoF issues, as I'll only be able to shot with f/6.4 in the best of the cases, which was not be the case here as I had to dive deeper. •  Oppose Composition / the background doesn't work for me, sorry. --Podzemnik (talk) 23:05, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Podzemnik: I get down there, shot eveything that shows up and is worth taking a picture of. Underwater you never now what you'll see and most of the wildlife there goes away if you approach. Getting a good angle, a rare subject and good quality (I probably get rid of 95% of the images I take) is already quite of a challenge. Asking for a nice background in underwater photography doesn't sound fair to me and I see no problem in this case. You don't have the possibilites underwater that you have above it to choose the best angle or the nicer background. In my opinion your comment is not sound. Poco a poco (talk) 10:11, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose I think the comment is sound. The background is not FP. I can tell you that wildlife does not go away when an experienced diver approaches. It is more tricky for novice divers who make more unecessary movements trying to get in the right place and then stay there. Although I don't take photos, I know how to approach underwater wildlife by using minimal movement and delicate buoyancy control whilst avoiding touching any coral. I think you need to be open to criticism and perhaps, as you become a better diver, you will find photogrpahy easier. You need to learn how to remain stationary in the water. You'll learn about drift diving. And swim throughs. It's not easyǃ Charlesjsharp (talk) 22:01, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Charlesjsharp The discussion here was rather about the background and not about my diving skills. When I shot this image I was still in the middle of the learning curve. By now I've 4 times more dives (yes, I've tons of images I didn't upload and not sure about that) than back then and don't consider myself a novice anymore. I keep learnimg thimgs and will always do but I don't think that I'm doing unnecessary movements. In fact, both hands are busy with rhe camera handles, so I can only use my legs. Poco a poco (talk) 14:12, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support-Bijay chaurasia (talk) 18:00, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose The quality is adequate for an underwater shot, but as I said earlier, this and many of your underwater shots lack some pleasing and real composition. I've held back from saying this on several of your noms since I know you don't react well to such comments. But you are still something of a newbie to diving and taking photos under water, you can't expect to go in at the same top level you have above the surface. Getting good compos in a new area always takes practice and patience. I'm not comparing with my own marine photos but with those made by more experienced divers like Rickard Zerpe. --Cart (talk) 20:53, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's hard to be good at everything Poco, and what makes a photo good often lies in the small details specific to a genre IMO (and certainly not in the gear or going everywhere and just "click"). Landscape photographers will wait for atmospheric conditions and/or walk a long way to reach the good spot, bugs hunter will go in the morning when they sleep (my guess), animals hunters will know their habit and wait for them (my guess too). For all these u can't expect to get that many FP in my view. - Benh (talk) 08:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose per other opposers. --Ivar (talk) 19:32, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Unfortunate background. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:38, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Expecting a nice background for underwater shots isn't just fair in my opinion. You will only manage that and get a HQ shot of the subject if the background is nice everywhere (great coral reef type of thing). Otherwise you cannot expect from an underwater photographer to wait and wait to get a good subject in a nice background from the ideal POV. Air is limited by the bottle and dives are expensive (let alone the equipmemt), too. For this shot I'd have understood comments like "too ordinaey fish" but not that the expectation regarding composition underwater is similar to shots above it. Poco a poco (talk) 14:12, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment You have another issue Poco a poco that you cannot solve - you are not diving in clear water. Other locations around the planet will be much better. Crystal clear water and beautiful corals etc. You'll have to wait till we can travel again... Charlesjsharp (talk) 09:27, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shagil Kannur, you should have included it on the file page. It serves little purpose on this nomination page since it will be archived after nine days to an obscure corner of the Commons. All info should be on the the file pages so that anyone who wish to use this photo can read it. Getting a lot of info on a good photo to users is what FP is all about. I have copied it to the right place. --Cart (talk) 10:58, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Thanks, Cart. This is an intriguing photo. It looks like she's tearing up, and that might merit explanation, too, but perhaps Shagil might not know whether it's emotion or contact lens problems. But regardless of that detail, it's a good photo of a dancer. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ceiling of an interance of Atabki Sahn in Fatima Masumeh Shrine, Qom, Iran
  • @Killarnee: , @W.carter: I can earn money by selling these picture's copy right. but to be seen by all, I abandon the copy right by uploading them in Wikimedia. I think these works are Masterpieces of Persian architectural art and rarely seen before. I agree with Miss Carter but I think we should consider these pictures Regardless of religion. these pictures reflect pure art and history of ancient world Whether Christian or Muslim. --Amirpashaei (talk) 16:15, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Of course it's all art and architecture. We just have a rather crude way of sorting photos here on Commons since our tagging system is antiquated. I sincerely thank you for donating these photos to WikiMedia, however there are always voters who get bored if there are a lot of similar photos nominated one after the other, whatever the subject. It's a very picky and tough audience. Perhaps if you had some other views or artwork you could alternate with, then you wouldn't risk what we call "reviewer-fatigue". Most experienced nominators try to mix up their noms to keep the audience alert, since it increases the chances of noms getting featured. FPC is always craving new fresh things. --Cart (talk) 16:49, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So I've seen several such mosaic pictures in the last few days and think it's enough, which is why I don't give a pro. And what do you want to tell me "you could also sell the pictures"? Should it be blackmail or should I fall at your feet now? -Killarnee (CTU) 18:08, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Showing the architectural masterpieces to the world is my proud and honor. that's caused donating them. it's not blackmailing. you can oppose with my nominations. but I don't understand why you think other voters shouldn't support. --Amirpashaei (talk) 18:30, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't give a pro because I just think that there are enough pictures of this kind, even if they are well done. At the end of the year, every second picture at POTY is a mosaic picture. -Killarnee (CTU) 19:12, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
every of these pictures are unique and designing them took many years. these art works not simple mosaic, they are unique. even now making these masterpieces are very hard and rarely can find architecture could design them. I think you don't know this art well. good luck.--Amirpashaei (talk) 19:23, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I recognize the art and I know what kind of masterpieces they are, but I would like it if you would nominate landscapes for example. -Killarnee (CTU) 19:54, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It seems like most of us are not bored - these ceilings are all really beautiful and different from one another, and we've seen way more pictures of churches than of mosques - but I'd surely love to see other types of photos of beautiful or interesting motifs in Iran, too. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:00, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Ikan Kekek. Amirpashaei, we have absolutely loads of featured pictures of church interiors and it shouldn't stop us featuring any more as long as we can still find pictures of outstanding quality and extraordinary subjects. The exact same is true with your pictures. In fact we are quite underrepresented with mosques (and even more so with synagogues, Hindu/Sikh temples etc.) compared with churches, so as far as I'm concerned I'm happy to vote support for almost any of these pictures you present us with. Cmao20 (talk) 00:20, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@W.carter: , @Ikan Kekek: , @Cmao20: Thanks for your support and high understanding of art. My purpose of nominating these pictures is to be seen better and using in more pages. --Amirpashaei (talk) 07:09, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You say "seen better and using in more pages", but this image is not used as far as I can see Amirpashaei. So why not? Charlesjsharp (talk) 12:05, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I meant relevant pages. on of the my purposes is saving these monuments in image form. because most of heritage in Iran don't maintain very well.--Amirpashaei (talk) 12:18, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Charles, I'm not surprised by that. The photo is recently uploaded and the author is foremost a photographer donating his photos to us and not a very active Wikipedian. Not every uploader will immediately go about spreading their photos on as many articles as possible. Also remember that Commons photos are used by many, many other sites outside the Wiki-verse, those uses don't show up on the Commons file page. I often find my photos online in the most unlikely places, but it always takes a while for a photo to get spread. By uploading photos here we make them available for people and that is enough. --Cart (talk) 12:20, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
  •  Comment @W.carter: @Cmao20: @Fischer.H: Thank you, Cart, for the more specific terminology. I have changed “antenna” to “navigation light mast” in all parts of the image description.
Make a better image with the mast up? - I have no control over the boat; only my camera and the recognition of subject and light. I mentioned this mast because I wanted viewers to understand that is normal for it to be in the down position when this tug is working in this part of the river. I don’t feel it detracts.
Of course, there is always a story... The April Moran is already past all the bridges upriver to the left and is heading out towards the Atlantic. The winter sun was setting in the late afternoon providing that lovely liquid light. The historic Norfolk skyline, including church spires, was in the background and my reflector was behind me. That reflector happened to be an eight-story, all-white office building that helped fill in the shadow side of the boat. I walked up to the dock about a minute before the April Moran came by.
Have re-processed the image to sharpen slightly. Hopefully, this may change minds. --GRDN711 (talk) 01:39, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for trying, but it is still not sharp enough for me. I think unfortunately it is a focus issue rather than simply being undersharpened, so there may not be a lot that can be done about it. Cmao20 (talk) 16:12, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Charlesjsharp: Yes, i can and do have a permission to use this child's portrait. I asked his father about this photo and doesn't have any problem. But is there any template to indicate Parental Permission --Bijay chaurasia (talk) 17:05, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Bijay. There probably is, someone else might help? Charlesjsharp (talk) 17:11, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Charlesjsharp: , Or Is it OK to write in description section that this user have permission to use this photo in Commons--Bijay chaurasia (talk) 17:29, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The template we have is {{Consent}}. If you use that and write about the father's permission in the description, that's enough. --Cart (talk) 18:27, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You keep giving this reason for opposing things here and at QIC, and I wish you'd stop. First of all, you have no idea what might be used on Wikipedia, but second, this is not Wikipedia and this is not FPC on any of the Wikipedias. Clouds reflected in a bay with jellyfish infestation at Rågårdsdal
Clouds reflected in a bay with jellyfish infestation in Åbyfjorden at Rågårdsdal, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. Most of the jellies are moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) and lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata). When these gatherings occur, the lion's manes go into a bit of a feeding frenzy capturing and eating moon jellies. The bigger lion's manes will capture smaller moon jellies with their tentacles and drag them up into their mouths. Smaller lion's manes will attach themselves to a moon jelly and eat. They seem to prefer eating the moon jellies from the underside. Some of the moon jellies in this photo are tattered and flaccid after having been partially eaten by lion's manes, others have circular marks from the lion's manes feeding. Eurasian tree sparrows feeding from the hand in Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan
  •  Comment The sparrows I'm most familiar with are house sparrows, as there are many of them in New York, and by analogy, I felt confident that the sparrow on the left was a male and the one on the right was a female, based on their feathers (and moreover, that they were probably a couple). It would be interesting if you had reason to believe I'm wrong. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:31, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I mean as in a 3D view, so that you can tell the shapes of the complex, reflective structures. Obviously, that's not happening. Adam Cuerden (talk) 12:46, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I understood. If we have light and shadow in a picture we have 3D view too. but in Āina kāri art you just see light's reflection and there is no shadow. because that reason you don't see the shape not even in reality and with your eyes.--Amirpashaei (talk) 13:02, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
  • Could work. According to photoephemeris.com the moon at 99,01% rose at that location at 19:43 on the date the exif indicates. Photo taken a bit later. This photo is taken at another time of year so a full moon is higher up. Although I think that this is a composite with the "real" moon being the glare behind the left part of the tower (this shot is not fully centered) and then mixed with a shot of the moon a little higher and away from disturbing lights --Cart (talk) 13:36, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Per above. Unlikely to be a real scenery. --A.Savin 13:52, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Cart, A.Savin I think it's real. 1) the size of the moon seems to match the FOV of a 300mm on a FF. 2) I checked on photoPills (same as photoEphemeris, but more torough). The moon wasn't in the perfect alignment at that date and a bit to the right, which matches the photo. If I were to do a composite, I might as well center the monument to make it clean. - Benh (talk) 17:19, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for checking. I'll abstain anyway. Bad file name, inadequate description and I'm no fan of the compo. Cramming all those elements (streetlights, fountain, moon) into the hole doesn't work for me. A pic with the moon centered just above the tower might be better. --Cart (talk) 17:31, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for your review. In the background you can see the gate of a bunker. It's a photograph of an ammunition depot so this small part helps to symbolize the reclaiming nature. --XRay talk 04:31, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Borujerdi House, Kashan, Iran
Thanks Mr Benh. That's your kind. Persian architectural is very rich and full of beauties. yes, unfortunately after revolution they did it. after revolution there was dogmatism thoughts. now even Fundamentalist don't do such things in this level.--Amirpashaei (talk) 18:23, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but I have to say this as an Iranian, Iran lost a golden opportunity, and with this revolution, we have gone back in history. --Gnosis (talk) 05:48, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I asked the Public Relations Manager of Kashan's heritages about the faces. he said after buying this place from owners, paintings were worn out and in Restoration process they could not Recreate the faces. because they haven't any pictures from the original faces.I'm sorry for false information. --Amirpashaei (talk) 08:29, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think knowing the context of their removal is more than enough. It's only factual and with no opinion. Thanks a lot for the investigation. I'll add that bit of information in the caption if you are fine with that. - Benh (talk) 09:11, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • After some thought, I won't mention that in the caption. It's hard to think it isn't voluntary that only the faces were washed out/removed/used, but it is not clear who could have done this. Sorry for disrupting. - Benh (talk) 09:26, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • The gallery should always be added at the beginning of the nom so that it's easy for voters to see what the nominator thinks the scene depicts (it's not always as easy as this bird) and to compare it to other existing FPs. It's even helpful to see if it's the first FPC of a species/place/item and no similar FPs exist. --Cart (talk) 08:42, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, I don't think so. There are always newbies who don't know the system well and also old-timers who get absentminded from time to time (hint to Poco about his latest nom). But failing to add a gallery after being reminded is not good. --Cart (talk) 09:25, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Florence - Porta San Niccolò, about 45 meters high, stands out in Piazza Poggi and is the only Florentine gate that has kept the structure unchanged since its completion which took place around 1345

  •  Oppose Nice composition. I don't think even the trees in the right middleground are sharp enough for FP, though - after all, FP is a high bar to clear. A sharper similar photo in more interesting light and/or with some nice clouds could be featurable. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:09, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I respect your opinion, but for the composition I would like to point out that I framed in the same photo, Porta San Niccolò with its Fountain, Piazza del Poggi, and in the background the Duomo with Brunelleschi's dome, the Campanile di Giotto and even Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. And all this was neither easy nor taken for granted. Everything that tourists go to visit in Florence, all in one photo. As a tourist note, I specify that the "Rampe del Poggi" depart from Porta San Niccolò with the wonderful fountains that lead to Piazzale Michelangelo.PROPOLI87 (talk) 07:00, 24 August 2020 (UTC)PROPOLI87PROPOLI87 (talk) 07:00, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
  • I mean I don't like the effect of having them blurry in the background, and it was less than necessary to increase excessively the speed with the current light conditions to create this feeling. I would have preferred a Dof similar to File:Kirab Calon Lengger Wanasaban.jpg, so that my eyes can navigate through the image and compare the various facial expressions (although in both cases the crop is sub-optimum) -- Basile Morin (talk) 15:54, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ah, ok. Thanks so much for the clarification. I think of aperture as an artistic choice (to highlight certain things and to de-emphasize others) and I just wanted to make sure I didn't misinterpret your post (most of us here being non-native speakers of English sometimes requires extra legwork in order to prevent misunderstandings). Thanks again, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:48, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • You're welcome. Yes a shallow DoF can be an artistic choice, but also a trend, or an easy solution. Easy solution because using the widest aperture of your lens saves you from worrying about speed and ISO: You'll always get a sharp target at F/2.8, whatever the composition. It works sometimes with an isolated subject, like here, but most of the time low DoF shuts off crucial elements within the frame. As an artistic choice, my personal opinion is that it's unnecessary to focus on a subject that is already leading in the composition. This woman in the foreground is automatically highlighted because located in front of all her followers. More creative would be the approach to teach us what these women behind add to the story. Although this is of course a personal taste, and the author might have done this on purpose, in a context. Idem for the tight framing, have these baskets voluntarily been sectioned or not? No clue -- Basile Morin (talk) 00:29, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • This wasn't about the image, but about the way we provide feedback while treating each other respectfully. I like "I don't agree with your artistic choices" much better than "What you did is inappropriate". Thanks, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:26, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • You sure can, I forgot all about that! It actually shows you just what an amazing engineering feat the Suez Canal was, that it's more or less the only visible sign of human activity in the region from space. Cmao20 (talk) 01:47, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I'm sorry, I have to oppose falsifying landforms. I cannot support this. Satellite photos of portions of the Earth are reference tools that have to be reliable. Unless this edit is reversed, my opposing vote will stand. And moreover, showing a bit of the satellite in the photo is perfectly natural, as it reminds the viewer of the context. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:22, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you can assure us that the landforms definitely look like that based on other satellite data, I'm OK with the edit. Otherwise, I wouldn't be, and I think we should consider the reliability of scientific reference photos to be a very serious requirement. Nothing unreasonable about it. Being cavalier in assuming a neat continuation would be unreasonable. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:27, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • The landform is exactly here. @Ikan Kekek: There's a dark spot noticeable at the right, and white sand under, as landmarks. You can draw a quadrilateral from El Hara (above), Faiyum, and Dendera Temple Complex, to locate the place on the picture. There's definitely a continuation from El Hara, until the intersection (out of the image) with a clearer part of the desert. Thus the missing part is similar to the sand right above. At this level of detail, really this is like a hair in a fur :-) Basile Morin (talk) 06:37, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Devil's Coach-horse
  • I think the answer to the question 'why not photograph live ones' is probably practicality. It must be difficult to get a living bug to stay still for long enough to produce a photo stack. Of course some photographers sometimes do manage it - Ermell especially - but if the only opportunity Poco had to get the image was a specimen, the end product is still FP to me. Cmao20 (talk) 01:18, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment It is challenging to focus-stack bugs, but using dead ones is not the answer. Some people put them in the fridge to slow down their metabolism. Better to keep trying to get it right. Museum specimen photos are of course very valuable. My two current focus-stacked damselflies are both hand-held shots outdoors and focus-stacked using Helicon Focus software. Charlesjsharp (talk) 07:00, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dead, here you can apply the strong light or flash that a lupe lens for 1-5x magnification requires and you can get as close as 5 cm with both the lens and the lighting. That's just impossible with a living animal as I needed in this case 36 frames for the focus stacking, that takes time (20 min approx.). Which animal wouldn't move 20 min long with a flash or strong light and a lens pointing at it 5 cm away? If you have no clue what I talk about have a look here how a US institute with lots of ressources does it or here how other people with more limited ressources do it.
  • Alive, forget using a lupe lens like MP-E and forget this level of detail. With a bit of luck and lots of attempts you could get detail but only for one frame, and at this level of detail DoF is ridiculous. Even with a good lens like the 100mm f/2.8 and a device like the helicon tube that allows you to shot very quickly a bunch of images to generate later on a FS image you have to be at a certain distance, again, forget this level of detail, that's a different kind of photography.
Please, don't complain about the fact that the animal is dead, you will never get this detail and DoF from a living animal. Poco a poco (talk) 08:27, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree Poco a poco. Don't you like the detail on my damselflies? I agree you have no hope with living animals with your technique. You need a different technique. Some cameras like the new Canon EOS 90D have built in focus-stacking, but only from live view. I use the Helicon Tube between my camea body and 100mm macro lens. I use burst mode and shoot 7 frames/second with the focus point moving further away every shot by 2mm. I don't use RAW as the camera writes too slowly. The Helicon software compenstaes for my sideways movements.T here can then be a lot of editing to erase multiple moving antennae. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:06, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
With all due respect, how can you affirm that the detail of this image of yours can be compared to the detail of this beetle? The beetle is 2,5 cm long and your damselfly 3,5 cm long. The beetle is 7,500 pixels long and parallel to the plane of the camera, your damselfly about 3,800 pixel long but not parallel to the plane of the camera, therefore approx. 2,800 pixel of detail. So, the detail of your image considering the resolution you offer (x axle) and the size of the subject is 3,75 lower. We are talking here about 2 different areas of photography, don't mix them up. I also have the 100 m f/2.8 and know what I talk about. Regarding using JPG instead of RAW for that burst needed there, double check whether the solution is not rather a faster memory card. Poco a poco (talk) 15:30, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. When I compare the two images, I come to a different conclusion. Many pixels does not result in higher quality. I use Sandisk Extreme 90 MB/s memory card, which writes less than 3 RAW+JPG images/sec. I do not want to shot just RAW, though that would only reach 3 images/sec. Not fast enough for a second burst of a live animal. Charlesjsharp (talk) 20:12, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I agree with you that many pixels don't necessarily result in higher quality, in fact, the more magnification, the trickier it is to get that quality because the lighting gets more difficult and you need to get very close to the object, so halos and those kind of things are more noticeable. The buffer size of your camera can store 27 RAW files, so I'm not sure what the problem could be. The 90 MB/s is the read speed, not the write speed, which will be lower, if you get a V90 card (e.g. Sony SF-G Tough Series UHS-II) you can write at a speed of up to 300 MB/s with a guaranteed minimum write speed of 90 MB/s. Poco a poco (talk) 17:58, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so it has 40 MB/s write speed, which makes using RAW even less possible. While it is buffering, I cannot take another shot. That is the problem with live animals. 90 MB/s would still be too slow. Charlesjsharp (talk) 13:23, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Nice! I hope you get to direct Mozart and Salieri soon. •  Weak oppose Underexposed. Compare here. Nice building, but the light is not well managed. You can increase quite a lot the luminosity and reveal every details. You can't take a night shot and say "it's night, so my image should be black!" And the timing used in the evening is never the same as during daylight. Taking a photo when the sun is low is particularly nice because the contrasts are very subtle. But it's not a reason to hide details everywhere. On the contrary, you'll get a much better result and a more striking appearance if you offer a standard exposure. Darkness is acceptable sometimes when the contrasts are intense, to create a special mood, but in this case there is no risk of blown highlights, and we want to see the patterns -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:44, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wat Si Sou Mang (Buddhist temple)
Now, for the little story: I did not plan to take pictures that midday afternoon. I had my camera with me just like I had my passeport too. I left the restaurant and discovered it, then instead of going straight to my hotel to avoid rains, I could not resist and was attracted by the view. A large bunch of very diverse images shot immediately before are with me, including that shot taken at 14:38, less than three minutes earlier. Why would I invent this scenery seriously? (I even have ugly flowers in front of a bank, lol , since I shot everything). I may upload the raw file (which is voluntarily underexposed) and you will check by yourself. • Hmm, interesting point Basile Morin. I definitely agree with you about some of the other pictures you link to - 1 for instance has a quite ridiculous sky. I don't think this one is so overcooked though. I had a look at this image in Jeffrey Friedl's Image Metadata Viewer and I can't find any evidence of the saturation being altered, although of course there are ways to change saturation that won't show up in the metadata. Overall I have seen sunsets in my life that have colours as vivid as this one, so personally I'm not going to say that this saturation is ridiculous. But you do make a good point when looking at some of the other images by this user. Any feedback from other users about whether the saturation is too much would be appreciated. • Obviously  Overprocessed. @Cmao20: you agree with me the #1 is oversatured, don't you? Well, check it out with Jeffrey Friedl's Image Metadata Viewer and you read "saturation 0". Logic? No. Because it is undeniably too saturated. This tool is useful to indicate what has been changed, but it does not show everything on Photoshop, and especially not the filters applied. Here I suspect blue and orange filters. Moreover, with your candidature, you can read from Jeffrey Friedl's Image Metadata Viewer blacks +88%! whites -64%, and shadows +48% with highlights -89%. That combination creates extreme contrast with heavy blacks -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:12, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • You're right, I didn't think to check the other image too. Blacks +88% is certainly a little much in pumping up the contrast. I shall wait for some more opinions, as I have seen considerably less natural-looking photos than this pass FPC, but we may withdraw this one. Cmao20 (talk) 02:44, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • 💡 A golden rule, if you really need to attenuate the highlights to render a sunrise or a sunset, then compensate this loss by increasing the whites, delicately. Not the contrary! . And not with the blacks in addition to force the impression like a tank 🦾 :-) But I agree with you it's not the first one nominated like this, and sometimes yes they even go promoted (feel free to give links so that we can compare). I just hope this one won't :-) and I also give the uploader a chance to make it better -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:30, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose per others, i´ve never seen such intense colors in nature, specially the purple ice. Je-str (talk) 16:00, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  I withdraw my nomination I no longer have confidence in the accuracy of this photo, and I don't expect User:Андрей Кровлин to reply to any pings, as he also didn't reply when I pinged him at COM:QIC. If he ever decides to address the points Basile and others brought up and produce a more true-to-life version of this photo, I can always renominate that version then. I still think this photo is beautiful, but someone who wants to provide radically altered photos should indicate that clearly in their file descriptions, and then we could consider them as such. Thank you for your reviews, everyone. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:31, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
