Although I'm sure it was not meant to (intent and tone are difficult to convey and to perceive across the wires), and regardless of how wrongheaded their new request was, the text of your {{O}} comes off as rather mean-spirited. (Specifically, doubling the time required using language that makes it sound like that's a new requirement for them (rather than the length of time you will require before you support), and also picking on a typo in the discussion - they happen, and it wasn't in a rename... picking on it as a reason to oppose seems a bit petty). @Storkk: Sorry, I was echoing the frustrations of the three opposes above mine. The applicant does not seem to take direction well. I reformulated that post.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:25, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi jeffG.

I don't know if it goes back to 1829. My question is just is it not a violation of copyright. I understood that these motto's have copyright. Just asking?

Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Firstac5

This seems a bit like a grey area. The user uploaded a bunch of photos, linking to http://www.survivetravel.com/, his Amazon referral blog. (you go there, click some Amazon link, buy the product from a seller that doesn't have to be him, he earns a referral fee)

He claims to be the copyright owner. (he could well be) Technically his blog is the source, but if we link that on every single image page that'll be sure to boost his Google ranking. It doesn't feel the same as providing a link to the website of a commercial photographer. I told him we'd be happy to have his photos, without the links. Was I right to say that? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:49, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I use Help:Gadget-UserMessages. But aren't parameters 2 and 3 of {{Copyvionote}} optional? --Jaqen (talk) 11:01, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

@Jaqen: Yes, but I beg you to please use one of them to give us non-Admins a chance at identifying patterns of users, source webpages, and our own previous uploads, and consequently helping other uploaders and ourselves to learn from their and our mistakes. The frustration of not being able to answer "What was it a copyvio of?" and "Whose copyright?" at COM:HD and COM:UDR is immense. Of course, such info in deletion logs is also very helpful.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:35, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jeff Thanks for reviewing the contributions. I understand what you say about the logo being used on Facebook. It is also used in http://www.iesoc.edu.ar/. Re: Flags of Darfur and Lebanon

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for notifying me about your flagging of the flags of Darfur and Lebanon as missing source information.

Although I am not the original creator of either, and both have since undergone revisions since mine, I'll just point out that in the upload history sections of each, you can see that source information was originally provided: Flag of Darfur.svg was originally tagged with Template:PD-self by User:Walden69, indicating it was his own work, while Flag of Lebanon.svg was originally attributed by User:Nightstallion to Openclipart. I don't know when or why the source information was removed from either, but it was evidently there to begin with, and it seems rather silly to e to be threatening deletion of files which have been used on literally tens of thousands of pages for over a decade simply because of what amounts to a clerical error.

Best regards,

Mnmazur (talk) 08:25, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Sorry for the inconvenience. I flagged those flag images because Green Giant had copied them from Category:Images without source to Category:Images of flags without source. They were in Category:Images without source because the source field in their Information templates was not filled in when those information templates were added. All actions were mistakes, I am sorry for mine.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:07, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, you left a mark saying that I did not provide sufficient info to that higher-res. version of the portrait for German baroque composer Joseph Schuster. Obviously the sketch is from some 19th-century, maybe earlier, journals for the educated classes, maybe from some musicological annual of that time. Yet this is something I only guess and cannot say for sure. In any case, there is 1) the names of the artists who created it in the engraving itself (see beneath the oval) - painting by v. Vieth of 1796, engraving by Pettschich in 1811, and 2) the link to the original source, the graphic collection of the university library of Frankfurt University, should be sufficient, should it not?--2A00:C1A0:4A00:2800:DCD8:5CA2:E6F1:E2D8 09:32, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Help

Hello,

Last month I asked for help regarding the sending of an email to a Flickr user about a change of licence to a photo for use in the Wikipedia article w:Graham Potter. Unfortunately, it seems the Flickr user did not agree to change the licence. Since you were kind enough to help me last time, could you send an email to this Flickr user regarding the licence change of this image (https://www.flickr.com/photos/7788682@N06/26924348538/in/photolist-H2djMQ-CMCvRv) instead? It is the only other suitable Flickr image of the subject I can find; I still think the aforementioned Wikipedia article would benefit from an image in the infobox. Thank you and kind regards Doogooder (talk) 19:16, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, before tagging files as 'no source' please see if the problem cannot be fixed. E.g. last September I spent a lot of time to fix sources for a large number of Indonesian CoA's (files beginning with 'Lambang'), which I found in Category:Images without source. For e.g. File:Lambang Kabupaten Subang.jpeg you could have simple removed the redundant maintenance category instead of tagging the file for deletion. On the other hand, you tagged a lot of files that are ineligible for copyright, e.g. File:Flag of Varese.jpg. In such cases you can simply add {unknown|source} to the source field instead of tagging for deletion. Jcb (talk) 15:22, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

@Jcb: Sorry about that. I will go through them.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:25, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Flyby "no source" tags on documents that are hundreds of years old

Could you please desist from the apparently careless no source tagging of very old documents please? The template encourages unthinking deletion of the images. In some cases these may be lower quality than other versions, but the correct process is to use the duplicate template or raise a deletion request if the case is not clear. Where the images are in use on other projects, as the example below is, a deletion request is always the best way to discuss any potential deletion.

The no source tags you added yesterday to files that have been hosted on this project for ten years are disruptive and waste volunteer time.

  1. File:Desportes - Premières œuvres (éd. 1600) II - Les Amours d'Hippolyte.djvu
  2. File:Desportes - Premières œuvres (éd. 1600) III - Cleonice. Dernières Amours.djvu
  3. File:Desportes - Premières œuvres (éd. 1600) IV - Elegies.djvu
  4. File:Desportes - Premières œuvres (éd. 1600) V - Imitations de L'Arioste.djvu
  5. File:Desportes - Premières œuvres (éd. 1600) VI - Meslanges I.djvu
  6. File:Desportes - Premières œuvres (éd. 1600) I - Diane. Premières Amours.djvu

There are plenty of other backlogs to spend time on that are unlikely to cause any disruption or controversy. Thanks -- (talk) 07:59, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

OTRS recruitment

Commons:Village pump#OTRS recruitment?

Not exactly how I would word it. Obviously when good instructions are provided, LR will be able to deal with this with much less effort than it currently takes OTRS and I suspect webmasters will often be more comfortable with it as they don't have to get familiar with OTRS, wait in line, request undeletion etc. For users it will generally be preferable because the website is public and OTRS is not. If it really reduces the OTRS backlog some OTRS members may even decide to do some license reviewing.

Sorry if this is a really awkward way of responding to your comment (i have no idea how wikipedia works), but yeah my dad left me his password but i didn't use his account to grab the image. • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 22:38, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

I keep forgetting to sign it properly, forgive my embarassing wikipedia etiquette.
